We are honored to have been able to assist our first two scholarship recipients in their educational endeavors.
Sam was born in Pomona, California to parents Jill & Austin Manuel and has one older brother, Mason. After several moves around the country and volunteering in efforts such as JDRF, church, local colleges, and the Fauquier Food Bank, he stumbled across an opportunity with a local volunteer fire department open to students who were 15 years or older. He began as a cadet with the New Baltimore Volunteer Fire Company (NBVFC) in 2015 and worked his way up to a fully certified firefighter. Sam went through a 9-month training program and 3-month EMT training course with Fauquier County in Northern Virginia. Upon completion, he served as the director of the cadet program with NBVFC and has been an active volunteer firefighter and emergency responder throughout his high school career. Sam will be attending the University of New Haven in the Fall to major in Criminal Justice: Emergency Management and Fire/Arson Investigation. He was also the only candidate offered a live-in opportunity with the Trumbull Volunteer Fire Company in Trumbull, CT for the Fall 2019 semester. This opportunity will allow Sam to continue his volunteer work as a volunteer firefighter while attending UNH, as well as cover his living expenses throughout his college career. Upon graduation, Sam hopes to continue working as a firefighter/first responder, as well as in emergency management services planning within his community.
Hannah Davis is graduating from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a degree in Psychology. She used to work as an EMT at concerts but after Route 91 that became very difficult for her. She found a new passion with volunteering in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and researching mental health to prevent further violence and trauma. This summer she will be attending UC Davis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing for her Master's program in Nursing where she can continue pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse to help those in need. In her free time, Hannah loves to paint, spend quality time with friends and family, and serve her community.
